SEOUL – South Koreans rejoiced this week after President Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached for attempting to declare martial law, saying the incident had strengthened their determination to continue their experiment with Asian-style democracy and also given them confidence to go ahead and buy the New Samsung Galaxy S-25 Ultra they had been thinking about since last Korean Christmas.
Most South Koreans interviewed by Breaking In Asia said they had failed to act on their purchasing dream because of generalized feelings of global inadequacy that had come to a head after Yoon declared martial law in what he said was a response to the anti-state forces that had gathered against him while he was out boozing for most of September, November, October and well into December.
But then when Yoon was impeached by majority vote in the National Assembly, dramatically shucking off the military rule he had imposed on the country in some weirdly dystopian Joseon Dynasty-style political set-piece, they, too, had felt both a political and retail unburdening, as if their yearnings for a fully realized democracy as well as unlimited purchasing power targeted at Samsung’s latest mobile offerings could now be unleashed.
With their newfound freedoms, South Koreans said they were now more willing to fully embrace the trappings of democracy, such as voting, political tolerance, transparency and accountability, while also committing themselves to buy each successive new electronics product Samsung puts out, including its premium Galaxy S series of smartphones, its Quantum Dot technology-packed QLED TVs, its surprisingly affordable Twin Cooling Plus fridges or even its SBD-935S toilet bidet system.
“What we really want most of all is for each one of our votes to count in a political system guaranteed to represent us all equally,” Mee Bak-sol, a 38-year-old beauty technician, told BIA. “This entire incident has reminded me and all my Korean compatriots what democracy truly entails, but more than anything it has taught us to hold onto our constitutional rights tightly and our retail privileges granted to us as the preferred buyers of Samsung chaebol products even tighter.”
